Design

Effective design connects to people where they live. Communicating a compelling message, it motivates them to make it a part of their lives. This is the measure of success that matters to us most at Rik Vig Design. The modern world we live in is filled with a flood of competing messages, constantly vying for people’s attention. To touch some inner place in the viewer – to intrigue, interest and convince them to reach out and pick something up, getting personally  involved with it, is the real challenge. Trend and style may catch the viewer’s attention, but they are not enough by themselves to build brand allegiance – enduring brands build best by nurturing a sense of honest believability and trust. Think of the iconic brands that have always seemed to be an ever-present, reassuring part of your life. These classic, familiar brands have created, over time, a subtle yet powerful visual language that cannot be ignored. Also, creating a feeling of friendly familiarity goes a long way in coaxing a customer to seek out a brand again and again – the  power of building this feeling into a brand should never be underestimated.

Personal History

Born and raised  in sunny Southern California, Rik Vig grew up realizing very early that his greatest interests were centered on all things creative. He was gleefully drawing (okay, scribbling) and entranced by music even before he took his first steps. Growing up in the 50′s near Hollywood gave him the opportunity to be a bit-part child actor in television and motion pictures. The magic of the entertainment industry fired his young imagination. His early teens became preoccupied with singing and playing in rock garage bands (to impress girls.) Fresh out of school, he started to follow an early dream of becoming an animator, but a short and grueling stint as an underling at the Hannah-Barbera studios and youthful impatience soured him on starting out at the very bottom of the industry. With a good buddy he’d met at school, he began designing and silkscreening original psychedelic posters that sold in local shops and eventually became popular all around the country. Some still pop up on eBay from time to time.
